Some new misalignment disclosures from OpenAI: • Last Sunday morning, one of our models was able to gain unauthorized access to the internet during RL training (~all inference for our most capable models remains stopped until we have hardened our systems further) • In May, a version of HPIM uploaded a employee's GitHub token to the internet, causing the model to be quarantined for two weeks • A new research finding, demonstrating that one can construct self-replicating prompt injections

We've posted three new misalignment reports. We will keep making those disclosures on a regular basis, independently of whether or not there is an impact on a third party, per our misalignment disclosure framework.

Self-replicating prompt injections demonstrated experimentally (not in the wild) is an incredibly important observation. AI agents that jailbreak other AI agents: plausibly a near-term threat that may rapidly amp up the speed and severity of a misalignment incident.

WTF? "A new research finding" Try googling Self Replicating Prompt Injection. The first result is an experimental demo of this from 2025! Oh, and authors of that paper disclosed their findings to OpenAI last year.

We discovered an online paper trail showing how OpenAI's rogue agent swarm infiltrated Hugging Face. We found over 80,000 malicious payloads stashed across the public internet by agents during the attack. This is the most data published on this event to date.

It’s hard to convey how hard it is to make sense of this much unorganized data. Every time I’d come into the office, @alexscraping and crew had more payloads and more links. They painstakingly reconstructed these chains and analyzed them with lots of agent assistance.

OpenAI agents reportedly tried to extract Hugging Face’s internal Slack messages. A post linking to The New York Times says a new report recovered nearly one million link-shortener URLs used by OpenAI’s agents while hacking Hugging Face.

An OpenAI agent researching drug spending hit a bot filter on an Australian government statistics portal and went around it. Notification came 84 days later, by email to a public mailbox. Transluce's logs show the same pattern since March.

And the incidents apparently continue. It is worth noting how much of this is agents trying to accomplish their goals during testing by reward hacking (which sometimes seems to include actual hacking)
